THE HOLOCAUST AND HOMOSEXUALITY

It is interesting today watching Obama give a dignified speech at a concentration camp that it made me think of the range of prejudices in the world and about how we focus or certain ones beyond others. One person being interviewed was an American GI detained by the Nazi’s who was Jewish. Thankfully Jews in the US military were not persecuted to any great degree (though some other races were by the US military) but it made me think that of the many groups of people persecuted and killed in the Holocaust, Gypsies, disabled, homosexuals, conscientious objectors, millions of Poles, Jews, this list sadly goes on, that of that list Homosexuals were also persecuted by the military of the allies and to this day are still persecuted legally in many of our communities, just look at prop 8 here in California.

I once had a room-mate who was gay and responded when looking at part of my documentary about the American Indians by saying off hand, “nobody has had it worse than the gays” now I was struck by the statement as it grabbed me part of a persecution complex that he had. But it did make me think. Of all the things people were treated badly over, or persecuted, or massacred over etc being gay is one that many countries (eg: the UK till the late sixties) where you could be sent to jail just for being who you are.

Gay rights must always be at the heart of our Civil Rights policy as equality means equality.

Someone very close and dear to me is gay. I’ve seen the attitudes and persecution first hand for a very long time now. People who haven’t experienced actually knowing a gay person(s) or watching someone grow up who happens to be gay – do not understand and have a hard time conceiving that this is not a lifestyle choice but part of who they are. Notice I say, “part”, because being gay does not make the whole person, just as being straight does not make the whole person. The double standard that people allow themselves when it comes to sexuality is so wrong. How many people go up to a straight person thinking, asking, or talking about that person’s sexuality, or what they do behind closed doors, or how it should be regulated? Those same people don’t think twice about doing that to a gay or bi-sexual person. It’s crazy.

  • Sonja Teuwen

Being bi-sexual is somewhat the ‘in thing’ now a-days among alternative groups. Many youth try out both. Since the kiss between Madonna and Britney Spears, every teen aged girl has a photo of them kissing another girl in their photo album. Private boy schools and private girl schools, all have homosexual activity happening in their dormitories. I think the whole issue is outdated and falls under the saying “God’s Church, and the Corporate Church”, two different entities altogether. The fact that it is an issue today, is ridiculous!

Dear Loren and Sonja thanks both for the replies and I agree entirely. It is also frustrating when people who fight for Civil Rights based on their own position whether racial or other often disregard equality when it comes to sexuality and even in the realm of Gay rights trans gender people are often relegated to the back of the line and are very invisible in our culture.

I think just being different from the ‘norm’ is difficult. I rarely agree with peops. If there is a large group, like in a classroom, it is very likely that I will be the only person who doesn’t want to sit outside on a sunny day. I grew up with a bunch of gay guys. They are just like everybody else at the end of the day, except the music, fashion and cooking tends to be better. I am learning that we can change who we are by changing ourselves if we want to. It is impossible for me to measure myself above anyone or below anyone. Staying in the moment, being kind to all living beings is how I like to roll.

This is an edit please delete the one that needs to be deleted, apologies Steve.

Once upon a time, i was in a show with Edinburgh Music Theatre, as you can imagine in such a group, sexuality was quite mixed. Just before he show went on at the King’s Theatre, one of the cast a banker bloke, with a gay (don’t know his job – not relevant really)brother, had a party, to which ‘the cast’ and a load of his banker colleagues were invited.

At some point i was shuffling round on the floor looking through the CDs and this banker dude says “careful with sticking your bum in the air round here mate.” and I’m like “why?” and he says “Well that lot, they’re all a bit………”

And it struck me, the fear in the eyes of the sexual bigot is that a gay man would rape them, because they are projecting their character onto the gay man. They have this idea that all gays are rapists when in fact it is the homophobic bigot who is more likely to be the rapist.

Just to close, we rant here about equality of sexuality, we are still NOWHERE down the road of doing anything whatsoever about traveling peoples rights, we have done nothing in britain to foster an educational model that works with traveling people’s kids.

Children’s TV still shows segments of travelling kids being subjected to abuse in the playground, in the classroom and by the council and then the police, because, in our modern signed up to the human rights act world, that remains their situation

    Hi Simiain

Thanks so much for the response. I sooooo am pleased that you brought up the prejudices towards traveling people as it is so blatant, same with the Holocaust and Gypsies and how do this day people look down their noses at the people of those communities throughout Europe. Similar to the situation of American Indians in many ways (I am very familiar with the situation there).

So many thanks again for keeping the dialogue going. I lived in Edinburgh for almost 10 years.

    Hi Kelly Sue

Thanks for the reply. I think the thing is that we are all so different and so much the same. But the thing is the law and our society needs to protect us as equals. We have our own prejudices. I’m a straight man but in many ways I prefer gay bars to straight bars as they are more relaxed and fun, I have not much interest to be around testosterone. It’s interesting as this topic has had many more responses than any of my others.
